The Together Band

Meet the Band

John Calhoun

SAXOPHONE

John Calhoun grew up in Sidney, Ohio, and began taking piano lessons at an early age. He first joined the school orchestra on viola and then quickly decided that playing saxophone in the school band was the way to go. With the urging of his school band directors, he joined the jazz ensemble and quickly fell in love with jazz and blues. John’s influences are Charlie Parker, Joe Henderson, Chris Potter and R&B horn bands like Tower of Power, Blood, Sweat, and Tears, and blues bands like Tommy Castro and B.B. King. John has performed in “too many to count” bands in the area and loves the challenge of improvising in each group.

John went to THE Ohio State University where he earned his bachelor’s in music education and is now the head band director in Fremont Public Schools. John and his wife, Jaime, have two wonderful little girls that are happy that their Dad is playing something other than jazz in the house.
